I used to practice saying the veggie names in Kannada (as opposed to the garbled Tamizh version at home) hundred times before walking up to the veg shop. But then the guy invariably understood (and accepted that he understood) all forms of Tamizh & Kannada so it was no problem. Mr.Gurudutt undoubtedly held south indian (thankfully we dindt dissect that term into its constituent states) in great esteem - those that taught their children when to use 'they' and when to use the singular.
